How to Reduce Travel Stress in Cats
Travel stress is real, but it can be significantly reduced with the right preparation and calming strategies.
Before Travel
- Complete carrier training well in advance
- Spray carrier bedding with pheromones 30 minutes before departure
- Maintain normal routines leading up to travel day
During Travel
- Cover the carrier with a light cloth
- Play cat-specific calming music
- Speak in calm, soothing tones
- Avoid opening the carrier (even if your cat cries)
- Keep the environment temperature-controlled and ventilated
Calming Aids
- Pheromone sprays (apply to carrier bedding, not directly on cat)
- Calming treats (L-theanine, chamomile-based)
- Familiar scent items (unwashed blanket or worn t-shirt)
For severe travel anxiety, consult your vet about prescription options. See also our Cat Anxiety guide.
