Cat Carrier Training Tips
Carrier training is the foundation of stress-free travel. Start weeks or months before any planned trip.
Step-by-Step Training
- Leave the carrier out permanently with the door open or removed
- Place treats, toys, and a familiar blanket inside
- Feed meals near, then inside the carrier
- Once your cat enters willingly, briefly close the door with treats inside
- Gradually increase door-closed time from seconds to minutes
- Pick up the carrier and walk around the house briefly
- Progress to short car rides
Tips for Success
- Top-loading carriers are easier for reluctant cats
- Spray carrier bedding with pheromones
- Never force your cat into the carrier
- Make the carrier a permanent cozy spot, not just a travel tool
For anxious cats, take the process even slower. Return to our Travel guide.
