How to Prepare a Cat for Car Travel
Most cats associate the car with one thing: the vet. Changing that association takes patience, but it makes every future trip easier.
Preparation Steps
- Start with carrier training — your cat should be comfortable in the carrier first
- Place the carrier in the car without driving anywhere. Let your cat sit inside with treats
- Start the engine and sit for 5 minutes. Reward calm behavior
- Take a short drive around the block. Gradually increase distance
- Always use treats and calm praise
During the Drive
- Secure the carrier with a seatbelt on the back seat
- Keep windows up and AC on moderate
- Play calming music or keep the car quiet
- Don’t open the carrier during the drive
- Cover the carrier with a light cloth to reduce visual stimulation
