Moving to a New Home With a Cat

Moving combines everything cats dislike: disruption, unfamiliar territory, and loss of scent markers. But with planning, you can minimize the trauma.

Before the Move

  • Pack gradually — sudden chaos increases stress
  • Keep your cat’s items (bed, toys, blanket) unpacked until last
  • Designate a quiet room as a “safe room” on moving day

Moving Day

  • Keep your cat in their safe room with food, water, litter, and a “Do Not Open” sign
  • Transport your cat last, after the movers are done
  • Drive calmly with the carrier secured

At the New Home

  1. Set up one room first as their base camp
  2. Place familiar-scented items around
  3. Gradually open up the home over days or weeks
  4. Keep doors and windows secured
