Moving to a New Home With a Cat
Moving combines everything cats dislike: disruption, unfamiliar territory, and loss of scent markers. But with planning, you can minimize the trauma.
Before the Move
- Pack gradually — sudden chaos increases stress
- Keep your cat’s items (bed, toys, blanket) unpacked until last
- Designate a quiet room as a “safe room” on moving day
Moving Day
- Keep your cat in their safe room with food, water, litter, and a “Do Not Open” sign
- Transport your cat last, after the movers are done
- Drive calmly with the carrier secured
At the New Home
- Set up one room first as their base camp
- Place familiar-scented items around
- Gradually open up the home over days or weeks
- Keep doors and windows secured
