Flying With a Cat: Basics
Air travel with cats is possible but requires careful planning and compliance with airline regulations.
Before Booking
- Check airline pet policies and fees
- Book your cat’s cabin spot early (limited per flight)
- Get an airline-approved soft-sided carrier
- Schedule a vet visit for a health certificate (usually required within 10 days)
Day of Travel
- Skip or reduce the morning meal to prevent nausea
- Arrive early and inform check-in staff about your cat
- Keep your cat in the carrier at all times in the airport
- Place carrier under the seat in front of you during the flight
- Offer water during layovers
Important Warnings
- Avoid cargo hold travel if at all possible
- Don’t sedate your cat unless specifically recommended by your vet
- Choose direct flights to minimize stress
After landing, give your cat time to decompress.
