Matted Fur: What to Do
Matted fur isn’t just unsightly — it’s painful. Mats pull on skin, restrict movement, and can trap moisture leading to skin infections.
How to Remove Mats Safely
- Never use scissors: Cat skin is paper-thin and tears easily. Scissors are the #1 cause of grooming injuries
- Use a mat splitter or seam ripper designed for pet fur
- Work from the outer edge of the mat, not the skin side
- Hold the base of the mat with your fingers to protect the skin
- Work slowly and take breaks if your cat gets stressed
- For severe matting, see a professional groomer or your vet
Prevention
The best treatment is prevention through regular brushing — especially for long-haired cats. Check mat-prone areas daily: behind ears, under legs, belly, and collar area.
