Best Grooming Routine for Long-Haired Cats

Long-haired breeds like Persians, Maine Coons, and Ragdolls have beautiful coats that require daily maintenance to stay healthy and mat-free.

Daily Routine

  1. Use a wide-tooth comb to work through the coat, starting from the tips
  2. Follow with a slicker brush to remove loose undercoat
  3. Pay extra attention to mat-prone areas: behind ears, under legs, belly, around collar
  4. Check for tangles or debris
  5. Finish with a soft bristle brush for shine

Preventing Mats

Mats form when loose fur tangles and compresses. Prevention is always easier than removal. If mats do form, see our guide on dealing with matted fur. For the full grooming routine, visit our Grooming pillar page.
