How Often Should You Brush a Cat?

Regular brushing is the single most impactful grooming habit. It removes loose fur, prevents matting, reduces hairballs, distributes natural oils, and gives you a chance to check for skin issues.

  • Short-haired cats: 1–2 times per week
  • Medium-haired cats: 2–3 times per week
  • Long-haired cats: Daily (or at minimum every other day)

Tips for Success

  • Start with short sessions (2–3 minutes) and build up
  • Brush in the direction of fur growth
  • Use the right tool for your cat’s coat type
  • Pair with treats to create positive associations
  • If your cat resists, see our guide on grooming resistant cats
