How Often Should You Brush a Cat?
Regular brushing is the single most impactful grooming habit. It removes loose fur, prevents matting, reduces hairballs, distributes natural oils, and gives you a chance to check for skin issues.
Recommended Frequency
- Short-haired cats: 1–2 times per week
- Medium-haired cats: 2–3 times per week
- Long-haired cats: Daily (or at minimum every other day)
Tips for Success
- Start with short sessions (2–3 minutes) and build up
- Brush in the direction of fur growth
- Use the right tool for your cat’s coat type
- Pair with treats to create positive associations
- If your cat resists, see our guide on grooming resistant cats
