How to Groom a Cat That Hates Brushing
Some cats genuinely dislike being brushed. This doesn’t mean grooming is impossible — it means you need a different approach.
Why Some Cats Resist
- Previous negative grooming experiences
- Sensitive skin or pain from matting
- General anxiety or fear of handling
- Wrong tool for their coat type
- Sessions that are too long or too rough
The Desensitization Approach
- Week 1: Just leave the brush near your cat during calm moments
- Week 2: Touch your cat with the brush briefly, then treat
- Week 3: One or two gentle strokes, then treat
- Gradually increase: Build up duration over weeks, never months
Alternative Tools
- Grooming gloves (feels like petting)
- Rubber curry brushes (gentle on sensitive skin)
- Self-grooming corners (wall-mounted brushes your cat uses independently)
For cats with anxiety, pheromone spray on the brush can help. See our nervous cat grooming checklist.
