Do Cats Need Baths?
Short answer: usually no. Cats are excellent self-groomers. But there are times when a bath is necessary.
When a Bath Is Needed
- Your cat got into something sticky, oily, or potentially toxic
- Vet-recommended for a skin condition
- Senior or obese cats who can’t groom effectively
- Long-haired cats with persistent soiling
- Flea treatment (in some cases)
How to Bathe a Cat
- Use lukewarm water (not hot)
- Use only cat-specific shampoo
- Wet the body, avoiding the face
- Massage shampoo in gently and rinse thoroughly
- Wrap in a warm towel and dry in a quiet room
- Never use a hair dryer on high heat
For cats who are highly stressed by bathing, waterless grooming wipes or dry shampoo for cats can be alternatives. See the full Grooming guide.
