Do Cats Need Baths?

Short answer: usually no. Cats are excellent self-groomers. But there are times when a bath is necessary.

When a Bath Is Needed

  • Your cat got into something sticky, oily, or potentially toxic
  • Vet-recommended for a skin condition
  • Senior or obese cats who can’t groom effectively
  • Long-haired cats with persistent soiling
  • Flea treatment (in some cases)

How to Bathe a Cat

  1. Use lukewarm water (not hot)
  2. Use only cat-specific shampoo
  3. Wet the body, avoiding the face
  4. Massage shampoo in gently and rinse thoroughly
  5. Wrap in a warm towel and dry in a quiet room
  6. Never use a hair dryer on high heat

For cats who are highly stressed by bathing, waterless grooming wipes or dry shampoo for cats can be alternatives. See the full Grooming guide.
