Cat Dental Care Basics
Dental disease affects over 70% of cats by age three, making it one of the most common health issues — and one of the most preventable.
Starting a Dental Routine
- Start by letting your cat lick pet-safe toothpaste off your finger
- Graduate to a finger brush, gently rubbing along the gum line
- Work up to a cat-sized toothbrush
- Aim for a few times per week (daily is ideal but any is better than none)
Signs of Dental Problems
- Bad breath (see bad breath article)
- Drooling or dropping food
- Eating on one side
- Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
- Pawing at the mouth
Annual dental check-ups with your vet are essential. Professional cleanings may be needed periodically. Visit our Grooming Guide for the full routine.
