Bad Breath in Cats

While a cat’s breath is never minty fresh, noticeably foul breath (halitosis) usually points to dental disease — and less commonly, other health problems.

Common Causes

  • Periodontal disease: The #1 cause — affects over 70% of cats by age 3

  • Tooth resorption: Painful erosion of tooth structure unique to cats

  • Oral infections: Bacterial buildup, abscesses, or stomatitis

  • Kidney disease: Can cause a distinctive ammonia-like breath odor

  • Diabetes: May cause a fruity or sweet breath odor

  • Diet: Wet food and fish-based diets can contribute to odor

What You Can Do

  • Schedule a dental check-up with your vet

  • Start a dental care routine at home (pet toothpaste, dental treats)

  • Look for signs of oral discomfort: drooling, pawing at mouth, eating on one side

Regular dental care is one of the most overlooked aspects of cat health. See our Grooming guide for dental care basics.
