Grooming Checklist for Nervous Cats
This checklist is designed for cats who find grooming stressful. The key principle: short sessions, positive associations, and never forcing it.
Before You Start
- Choose a calm, quiet time when your cat is relaxed
- Have treats ready
- Spray grooming tools with calming pheromones 30 min before
- Set a timer — no more than 3–5 minutes initially
The Nervous Cat Grooming Order
- Start where they like being petted (usually cheeks or chin)
- Transition to gentle brushing in the same areas
- Gradually work to shoulders and back
- Save sensitive areas (belly, paws, tail) for when trust is built
- End on a positive note — treat and praise
What to Skip (For Now)
Don’t attempt nail trimming, ear cleaning, or bathing until your cat is comfortable with basic brushing. Build one skill at a time. For anxiety management, see our Cat Anxiety guide.
