Grooming Checklist for Nervous Cats

This checklist is designed for cats who find grooming stressful. The key principle: short sessions, positive associations, and never forcing it.

Before You Start

  • Choose a calm, quiet time when your cat is relaxed
  • Have treats ready
  • Spray grooming tools with calming pheromones 30 min before
  • Set a timer — no more than 3–5 minutes initially

The Nervous Cat Grooming Order

  1. Start where they like being petted (usually cheeks or chin)
  2. Transition to gentle brushing in the same areas
  3. Gradually work to shoulders and back
  4. Save sensitive areas (belly, paws, tail) for when trust is built
  5. End on a positive note — treat and praise

What to Skip (For Now)

Don’t attempt nail trimming, ear cleaning, or bathing until your cat is comfortable with basic brushing. Build one skill at a time. For anxiety management, see our Cat Anxiety guide.
