How to Travel With a Cat Long Distance

Long-distance travel requires extra planning but is absolutely manageable with the right preparation.

Planning Ahead

  • Plan rest stops every 2–3 hours
  • Book pet-friendly accommodations in advance
  • Bring enough food, litter, and supplies for the trip plus extras
  • Get a health certificate from your vet if crossing state lines
  • Ensure your cat’s microchip and ID tags are up to date

During Rest Stops

  • Offer water and a litter box inside the car (never let your cat out unsecured)
  • Never leave your cat in a parked car
  • Check on their comfort level before continuing
