How to Clean a Cat's Ears
Healthy cat ears are pink, clean, and odor-free. Most cats don’t need frequent ear cleaning, but regular checks help catch problems early.
How to Clean
- Use a vet-approved ear cleaner
- Apply a few drops into the ear canal
- Gently massage the base of the ear for 20–30 seconds
- Let your cat shake their head (they will!)
- Wipe away visible debris with a cotton ball
- Never insert cotton swabs into the ear canal
Signs of Ear Problems
- Dark, crumbly discharge (may indicate ear mites)
- Redness or swelling
- Odor from the ears
- Head shaking or scratching at ears
- Head tilting
If you notice these signs, see your vet before cleaning — some conditions require specific treatment. Back to the Grooming Guide.
