How to Clean a Cat's Ears

Healthy cat ears are pink, clean, and odor-free. Most cats don’t need frequent ear cleaning, but regular checks help catch problems early.

How to Clean

  1. Use a vet-approved ear cleaner
  2. Apply a few drops into the ear canal
  3. Gently massage the base of the ear for 20–30 seconds
  4. Let your cat shake their head (they will!)
  5. Wipe away visible debris with a cotton ball
  6. Never insert cotton swabs into the ear canal

Signs of Ear Problems

  • Dark, crumbly discharge (may indicate ear mites)
  • Redness or swelling
  • Odor from the ears
  • Head shaking or scratching at ears
  • Head tilting

If you notice these signs, see your vet before cleaning — some conditions require specific treatment. Back to the Grooming Guide.
