Cat Dandruff Causes
Cat dandruff (dry, flaky skin) is common and usually treatable. It’s different from dander (microscopic skin cells all cats shed) and is visible as white flakes.
Common Causes
- Low humidity: Especially in winter with indoor heating
- Poor diet: Lacking essential fatty acids
- Obesity: Overweight cats can’t groom their back properly
- Allergies: Food or environmental
- Parasites: Cheyletiella mites (“walking dandruff”)
- Fungal infections: Including ringworm
Treatment
- Improve diet with omega-3 supplements (consult your vet)
- Use a humidifier in dry environments
- Brush regularly to distribute natural oils
- If persistent, see your vet to rule out parasites or fungal issues
