Healthy Cat Treats and Snack Habits
Treats strengthen your bond and help with training, but they can also contribute to obesity if overused. The key is moderation and quality.
The 10% Rule
Treats should make up no more than 10% of your cat’s daily caloric intake. For a 200-calorie-per-day cat, that’s only about 20 calories in treats.
Healthy Treat Options
- Freeze-dried meat treats (single ingredient)
- Small pieces of cooked plain chicken or turkey
- Commercial treats with named meat as the first ingredient
- Dental treats (can supplement dental care)
Treats to Avoid
- Treats high in carbohydrates or fillers
- Anything with artificial colors or flavors
- Human food (especially toxic foods)
- Milk and dairy products
Use treats purposefully — for training, bonding, or as part of a puzzle feeder. See our Feeding Guide for more.
