Weight Control Tips for Indoor Cats
Obesity is the most common nutritional disorder in cats and leads to diabetes, joint disease, and shortened lifespan. Indoor cats are at the highest risk.
Is Your Cat Overweight?
You should be able to feel your cat’s ribs without pressing hard. From above, there should be a visible waist. From the side, the belly should not hang below the rib cage. Your vet can provide a body condition score.
Weight Management Strategies
- Measure portions: Use a kitchen scale, not a scoop
- Schedule meals: No free-feeding
- Increase play: 2–3 active play sessions daily (15 min each)
- Use puzzle feeders: Slow eating and provide mental stimulation
- Limit treats: ≤10% of daily calories
- Monitor weight: Monthly weigh-ins to track progress
Important Safety Note
Never crash-diet a cat. Rapid weight loss can cause hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease), which is life-threatening. Work with your vet to create a gradual weight loss plan — typically 1–2% of body weight per week.
