Foods Cats Should Never Eat

Cats are curious, and some will try to eat anything they can reach. Keep these dangerous foods away from your cat.

Toxic Foods

  • Chocolate: Contains theobromine, toxic to cats
  • Grapes and raisins: Can cause kidney failure
  • Xylitol: Artificial sweetener found in gum and some baked goods
  • Alcohol: Even small amounts can be life-threatening
  • Caffeine: Coffee, tea, energy drinks
  • Raw eggs: Risk of salmonella and biotin deficiency
  • Cooked bones: Can splinter and cause internal injury

Surprising No-Nos

  • Milk and dairy: Most adult cats are lactose intolerant
  • Raw fish: Can destroy thiamine (vitamin B1)
  • Liver (in large amounts): Can cause vitamin A toxicity
  • Dog food: Not toxic, but nutritionally inadequate

If you suspect your cat has eaten something toxic, contact your vet or a pet poison helpline immediately. For safe treat options, see Healthy Cat Treats.
