How to Transition Cat Food Safely

Sudden food changes are one of the most common causes of digestive upset in cats. A gradual transition over 7–10 days prevents stomach issues.

The Transition Schedule

  • Days 1–2: 75% old food, 25% new food
  • Days 3–4: 50% old, 50% new
  • Days 5–6: 25% old, 75% new
  • Day 7+: 100% new food

Tips for Success

  • If your cat shows digestive upset, slow down the transition
  • Some cats need up to 2 weeks for a full switch
  • Mix thoroughly so they can’t pick out one food
  • If switching from dry to wet (or vice versa), offer them side by side initially

If your cat refuses the new food entirely, see our article on dealing with picky eaters.
