Sleep Changes in Senior Cats

Cats already sleep 12–16 hours a day. Senior cats may sleep even more — up to 20 hours. But changes in sleep patterns can signal health issues.

Normal Sleep Changes

  • Sleeping more total hours
  • Deeper, more restful sleep
  • Preferring warmer, softer spots
  • Less interest in nighttime activity

Concerning Changes

  • Nighttime restlessness or vocalization (may signal cognitive dysfunction)
  • Sudden excessive sleeping paired with appetite loss
  • Sleeping in unusual or hidden locations
  • Difficulty getting comfortable

Supporting Good Sleep

Provide warm, soft beds in quiet locations. Heated pads (set on low) can ease arthritis. Maintain a calm evening routine. If nighttime restlessness is new, consult your vet — it could indicate pain, cognitive changes, or anxiety.
