Cognitive Changes in Older Cats
Feline Cognitive Dysfunction (FCD) affects an estimated 28% of cats aged 11–14 and over 50% of cats 15+. It’s similar to dementia in humans.
Signs of FCD
- Disorientation — getting “lost” in familiar rooms
- Loud vocalization, especially at night
- Changes in sleep-wake cycles
- Forgetting litter box location or training
- Staring blankly at walls or into space
- Reduced interaction with family members
- Decreased grooming
How to Help
- Maintain consistent routines
- Use night lights to reduce disorientation
- Keep the environment predictable
- Provide gentle mental stimulation
- Discuss supplements or medication with your vet
- Be patient and compassionate
