Cognitive Changes in Older Cats

Feline Cognitive Dysfunction (FCD) affects an estimated 28% of cats aged 11–14 and over 50% of cats 15+. It’s similar to dementia in humans.

Signs of FCD

  • Disorientation — getting “lost” in familiar rooms
  • Loud vocalization, especially at night
  • Changes in sleep-wake cycles
  • Forgetting litter box location or training
  • Staring blankly at walls or into space
  • Reduced interaction with family members
  • Decreased grooming

How to Help

  • Maintain consistent routines
  • Use night lights to reduce disorientation
  • Keep the environment predictable
  • Provide gentle mental stimulation
  • Discuss supplements or medication with your vet
  • Be patient and compassionate

FCD is not curable but can be managed. Early diagnosis helps. For more, return to our Life Stages & Aging guide.
