Common Changes in Senior Cats
Cats are considered senior at around 11 years. At this stage, several predictable changes occur that you can prepare for and manage.
Physical Changes
- Muscle mass decreases while fat may increase or decrease
- Joints stiffen (arthritis is very common)
- Coat and skin quality changes
- Dental disease progresses
- Vision and hearing may decline
Behavioral Changes
- Sleeping patterns shift (more sleep, different schedule)
- Less interest in active play (but still need gentle engagement)
- May become more vocal or more withdrawn
- Possible litter box issues (mobility or cognitive)
- Changes in social behavior
Twice-yearly vet visits are recommended for senior cats. See our Cat Health guide for age-related conditions.
