Common Changes in Senior Cats

Cats are considered senior at around 11 years. At this stage, several predictable changes occur that you can prepare for and manage.

Physical Changes

  • Muscle mass decreases while fat may increase or decrease
  • Joints stiffen (arthritis is very common)
  • Coat and skin quality changes
  • Dental disease progresses
  • Vision and hearing may decline

Behavioral Changes

  • Sleeping patterns shift (more sleep, different schedule)
  • Less interest in active play (but still need gentle engagement)
  • May become more vocal or more withdrawn
  • Possible litter box issues (mobility or cognitive)
  • Changes in social behavior

Twice-yearly vet visits are recommended for senior cats. See our Cat Health guide for age-related conditions.
