What Cats Need to Feel Safe
A cat who feels safe is a cat who can relax, play, eat, and bond. Safety is the foundation of everything else in your relationship.
The Five Needs
- A safe space: An enclosed, private area they can retreat to anytime
- Adequate resources: Food, water, litter, scratching — accessible and plentiful
- Predictability: Consistent routines and stable environment
- Control: The ability to choose when to interact and when to retreat
- Positive associations: Gentle handling, treats, and respect for their boundaries
Signs Your Cat Feels Safe
- Sleeping in open, exposed positions (belly up)
- Slow blinking at you
- Kneading
- Regular eating, drinking, and litter box use
- Grooming in your presence
- Approaching you for affection
