What Cats Need to Feel Safe

A cat who feels safe is a cat who can relax, play, eat, and bond. Safety is the foundation of everything else in your relationship.

The Five Needs

  1. A safe space: An enclosed, private area they can retreat to anytime
  2. Adequate resources: Food, water, litter, scratching — accessible and plentiful
  3. Predictability: Consistent routines and stable environment
  4. Control: The ability to choose when to interact and when to retreat
  5. Positive associations: Gentle handling, treats, and respect for their boundaries

Signs Your Cat Feels Safe

  • Sleeping in open, exposed positions (belly up)
  • Slow blinking at you
  • Kneading
  • Regular eating, drinking, and litter box use
  • Grooming in your presence
  • Approaching you for affection
