Cat Body Language Basics
Understanding your cat’s body language transforms your relationship. It helps you respect boundaries, recognize needs, and respond appropriately.
Tail Language
- Tail up: Happy, confident greeting
- Tail up with curve: Playful, curious
- Puffed tail: Frightened, trying to look bigger
- Low or tucked tail: Insecure, anxious, or submissive
- Swishing tail: Agitated or focused (not wagging like a dog)
Ear Position
- Forward: Alert, interested, content
- Sideways (airplane ears): Nervous or irritated
- Flattened back: Fearful or aggressive
Eye Signals
- Slow blinks: Trust and affection (“I love you” in cat)
- Dilated pupils: Excitement, fear, or play mode
- Direct stare: Challenge or threat (from another cat’s perspective)
Practice slow-blinking back at your cat — it’s one of the easiest ways to build trust. For more, return to the New Cat Owner Guide.
