Cat Body Language Basics

Understanding your cat’s body language transforms your relationship. It helps you respect boundaries, recognize needs, and respond appropriately.

Tail Language

  • Tail up: Happy, confident greeting
  • Tail up with curve: Playful, curious
  • Puffed tail: Frightened, trying to look bigger
  • Low or tucked tail: Insecure, anxious, or submissive
  • Swishing tail: Agitated or focused (not wagging like a dog)

Ear Position

  • Forward: Alert, interested, content
  • Sideways (airplane ears): Nervous or irritated
  • Flattened back: Fearful or aggressive

Eye Signals

  • Slow blinks: Trust and affection (“I love you” in cat)
  • Dilated pupils: Excitement, fear, or play mode
  • Direct stare: Challenge or threat (from another cat’s perspective)

Practice slow-blinking back at your cat — it’s one of the easiest ways to build trust. For more, return to the New Cat Owner Guide.
