How to Set Up a Litter Box Area

A well-set-up litter box area prevents one of the most common problems cat owners face: litter box avoidance.

Setup Rules

  • Location: Quiet, low-traffic, easily accessible. Away from food and water
  • Type: Open boxes are preferred by most cats. If using covered, ensure good ventilation
  • Size: At least 1.5x your cat’s body length
  • Litter: Unscented clumping litter is the safest starting point. 2–3 inches deep
  • Number: One per cat, plus one extra. In different locations

Maintenance

  • Scoop at least once daily
  • Full litter change weekly
  • Wash the box with mild soap monthly
  • Don’t use strong cleaners (cats are sensitive to smell)

If your cat avoids the litter box, it’s usually about location, cleanliness, or stress — not spite. Return to the New Cat Owner Guide.
