Litter Box Changes That Signal Health Issues

The litter box is one of the best diagnostic tools available to cat owners. Changes in frequency, consistency, color, or behavior around the box can signal health issues long before other symptoms appear.

What to Watch For

  • Increased urination: Can signal kidney disease, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism

  • Straining to urinate: A medical emergency in male cats — could indicate urinary blockage

  • Blood in urine: Can indicate infection, crystals, or bladder stones

  • Diarrhea or constipation: Persistent changes warrant investigation

  • Blood in stool: Always see a vet

  • Changes in volume: Producing significantly more or less waste

  • Avoidance: Suddenly refusing the box (could be pain-related or stress-related)

Keeping a Log

Tracking litter box habits may sound excessive, but it’s invaluable for catching early changes. Note daily: number of clumps, stool consistency, and any unusual behavior around the box.
